It's ALMOST Summer......

I was really looking forward to participating in "Tammy 4 All Seasons" and got an early start in mid-December with pauses for holiday commitments.  Not to worry...plenty of time to finish well before my "due date".

Enter Murphy's Law:  If anything can go wrong, it will.  On New Year's Day, my mother fell and broke her hip.  Since she can no longer live alone, we started the grueling process of moving her belongings to my sister's house.  This involved multiple trips for me driving from my home to mother's apartment, to sister's home, to the nursing home, and back to my home....330 mile round trip.  I have logged over 1500 miles in the last two weeks, with more to come.

And, somewhere in this saga, I have damaged a retina!  So I am showing you my failure at finishing this project.

I chose Summer, but did not use vintage fabric...though the red on the bag is a 1930's copy print.  I ended up using 14 point white fabric for the stitching, which I normally shy away from.

I actually had two lovely 28 point fabrics..one an Irish Linen and a hand dyed fabric in a Queen Anne's Lace color that I was excited to try.  So, I began on the hand dyed while sitting in the hospital with my mother.  I just could NOT see well enough...even with my Beam and Read.

I may not have used vintage fabric, but I did try to use my vintage Beam and Read.  This is over 20 years old and sports a single, incandescent bulb.  It was no help.  I considered just throwing it out, but looks like the fault lies with my retinal problem, not my ancient stitching pal.  I am definitely looking for the new model, though.

After I switched to 14 point white fabric, the stitching went somewhat better, until the nurse told me it would be best to turn out the room lights to make it more restful for my mother.  So, I tried to stitch standing at the room window on a dark, cloudy day.  When I got home to bright sunlight reflecting off the lake outside my doors, I realized my grey outline stitches were not grey enough.

I chose to make a ruffle, rather than box pleats...again because I could do it at the hospital.

This was still fun, in spite of all my trials and tribulations.  As soon as I get my eyesight repaired, I intend finishing the project.

Please visit the rest of our "Tammy 4 All Seasons" participants.  You won't be disappointed in the quality of their work.

  20. What a start to the new year! I do hope your mother is doing better and that you and your sister are able to have some time to relax. We moved a relative into assisted living on New Year's Eve and that was hard in itself. I feel for you and all you have been through this year. And I am praying for a speedy recovery for your mother with her hip and for you with your eye.

I am so impressed that your project is nearly complete, in spite of everything life has thrown your way. Your bag and your pinny look wonderful!

  24. A beaufiful finish despite all the distractions. Your stitching is fabulous and I must say, the portability of cross stitching makes for a perfect way to make those hours tick away in the hospital. Sending best wishes to your mom and you.

  32. You are amazing to have accomplished this beautiful bag and pinny with all your trials. When my mother died, we had to schedule her funeral around my brother's surgery for a detached retina. He was a high school principal and one of his special ed kids said "Mr. Cartwright has a detached rectum." We all had a great laugh about that. He and I each have double vision issues and the other brother does not. I had to have surgery on both my eyes in November 2013. I have prisms in both my lenses and I still have to move my head to be able to focus. I don't have to use my glasses to drive most of the time. I don't even have a restriction on my driver's license. Back to you - I am just blown away by the quality of your work and your tenacity to the projects. You amaze me that you have been able to accomplish all this with all that has come your way. You certainly are an inspiration to all of us. Thank you for participating in the hop and sharing not only your work but also your story about the details behind the project. They say every quilt has a story - every project has a story and this one has a marvelous story about a wonderful lady with a great, loving spirit and lots of tenacity.

  52. The summer cross stitch is possibly my favorite, maybe it's cause that bathing suit is just the neatest shape. I used to cross stitch a long time ago and am regretting not jumping in on this blog hop but I'm so happy I get to oogle all of your fabulous creations!

  53. Yes, if stress burned calories, I would be a super model too. You are almost finished your Tammy and it is awesome!! I started with the summer too...you will love yours when it is finished...it won't take you much longer. It has been a fun hop. Sorry to hear about your mother...my husband has some serious health concerns at the moment...I'm taking one day at a time, when I'm exhausted I'm not very productive!! Just do what you can, when you can!! Happy stitching, Pauline
